Joshua S. Friedman is Co-Founder, Co-Chairman, and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Canyon Partners, LLC. Mr. Friedman is a graduate of Harvard College (B.A., summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Physics), Oxford University (M.A., honors, Politics and Economics, Marshall Scholar), Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude), and Harvard Business School (M.B.A., Baker Scholar). Prior to forming Canyon, Mr. Friedman was Director of Capital Markets for High Yield and Private Placements at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Prior to working at Drexel, he worked in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department of Goldman Sachs in New York. Mr. Friedman is also a director and trustee of a number of nonprofit and charitable organizations.
Mitchell R. Julis is Co-Founder, Co-Chairman, and Co-CEO of Canyon Partners, LLC. Mr. Julis is a graduate of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University (B.A., magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude), and Harvard Business School (M.B.A., honors). Prior to forming Canyon, Mr. Julis directed a group of professionals responsible for a portfolio of distressed and special situation securities at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Prior to working at Drexel, he was a bankruptcy and creditors' rights attorney at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York. Mr. Julis has authored a number of articles published in law journals and other periodicals on the subject of bankruptcy and distressed credit investing.
Senior Portfolio Managers
George Jikovski is a Partner and Senior Portfolio Manager. He primarily focuses on identifying investment opportunities in the mortgage-backed securities, structured finance and credit derivatives sectors. In addition, Mr. Jikovski is involved in the risk management and hedging of the portfolios.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2007, Mr. Jikovski was at Trust Company of the West, where he focused on high grade MBS, including MBS derivatives, collateralized mortgage obligations (CMOs) and market value CDOs. Mr. Jikovski was previously with the Financial Restructuring Group at Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin and was an Investment Banker in the Corporate Finance / M&A group at Bear, Stearns & Co, Inc. Mr. Jikovski graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.A. in Business Economics and a minor in accounting. Mr. Jikovski is a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder.
Todd Lemkin is a Partner and Senior Portfolio Manager. Mr. Lemkin oversees Canyon’s European investments and the London office. Mr. Lemkin focuses on opportunities in stressed and distressed bank loans and high yield securities across a variety of industries in Europe, as well as in the U.S. cable, media, telecom, satellite, technology, real estate, building products, and homebuilding sectors.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2003, Mr. Lemkin was an analyst at Scoggin Capital Management in New York where he focused on analyzing securities of distressed and bankrupt companies. Prior to working at Scoggin, he was an Investment Banker in the Healthcare Group of Banc of America Securities and the Mergers & Acquisitions Group of Lehman Brothers. Mr. Lemkin is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (B.A., English).
Dominique Mielle is a Partner and Senior Portfolio Manager. Ms. Mielle’s primary focus is on the transportation, technology, retail, and consumer sectors. Ms. Mielle also specializes in corporate securitizations and select high yield municipal bonds, and she is responsible for all aspects of Canyon's CLO business.
Prior to joining Canyon in 1998, Ms. Mielle worked as an Analyst with Lehman Brothers, Inc. in the Financial Institutions Group, where she focused on mergers and acquisitions, and also worked as an Associate at Libra Investments, Inc. in the Corporate Finance department, where she covered middle market companies. Ms. Mielle graduated from Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales in France (B.S., International Management) and Stanford University Business School (M.B.A., Finance).
Soon Pho is a Partner and Senior Portfolio Manager. Mr. Pho oversees the investment activities across Canyon’s liquid alternatives portfolios. In addition, Mr. Pho manages the convertible bond portfolio (including arbitrage and distressed opportunities). Mr. Pho also focuses on investments in the industrials, healthcare and mining sectors.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2001, Mr. Pho was an Associate at JUMP Investors, where he evaluated investments in early stage information technology companies. Prior to JUMP, Mr. Pho worked in the Investment Banking group at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette. Mr. Pho graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (B.S., summa cum laude, Economics).
Chris Heine is a Partner and Head Equity Trader.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2005, Mr. Heine was a Principal and Head Equity Trader at Och-Ziff Capital Management Group in New York. Prior to Och-Ziff, Mr. Heine was Vice President and Director at Toronto Dominion Securities (USA) in the Institutional Equity department. Prior to that, Mr. Heine was a Registered Option Trader and market maker on the American Stock Exchange. Mr. Heine is a graduate of Union College (B.A., Managerial Economics).
Desmond Lynch is a Partner and Head Debt Trader. Mr. Lynch’s primary focus is to oversee trading activity in credit market investments.
Prior to joining Canyon in 1993, Mr. Lynch was a member of the Mergers & Acquisitions department at The Seidler Companies. Prior to that, Mr. Lynch was an Account Executive at Bear, Stearns & Co., Inc., where he was involved in the sales of debt and equity investments. Mr. Lynch is a graduate of the University of Oregon (B.S., Finance).
John Plaga is a Partner and Chief Financial Officer.
Prior to joining Canyon in 1997, Mr. Plaga spent three years at Trust Company of the West where he managed an accounting staff and coordinated the financial reporting of various international equity and emerging market debt portfolios. Previously he was a senior auditor with Ernst & Young. Mr. Plaga is a graduate of University of Southern California (B.S., Accounting, cum laude). He is a Certified Public Accountant and CFA charterholder
Doug Anderson is Chief Compliance Officer. He is responsible for monitoring compliance with the federal and state securities laws as well as client mandates.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2005, Mr. Anderson was a senior Securities Compliance Examiner with the Pacific Regional Office of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for over five years. He was responsible for conducting compliance examinations (routine and cause) of various investment advisers and investment companies. Mr. Anderson is a graduate of the University of California, Davis (B.A., Economics and Communications) and Vermont Law School (J.D., cum laude).
Jonathan Kaplan is a Partner and the General Counsel of Canyon Partners, LLC and Canyon Capital Advisors LLC. He also sits on the Board of Directors for the Canyon funds and oversees Operations, along with John Plaga, Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Kaplan has worked with Canyon as external and internal counsel for over 15 years. Prior to joining Canyon in 2007, he was a partner at Sidley Austin LLP. Mr. Kaplan practiced at Sidley from 1997-2007 as a corporate transactional attorney, representing primarily investment funds, including Canyon and a number of other investment advisors. Mr. Kaplan joined Sidley in June 1997 and earned admission to the State Bar of California in December, 1998. Before joining Sidley, Mr. Kaplan clerked for The Honorable Lynne Riddle of the United States Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California. Mr. Kaplan is a graduate of University of California, San Diego (B.A., Political Science) and New York University School of Law (J.D.).
Robert Herin is responsible for all Information Technology. Prior to joining Canyon in 2015, Mr. Herin was Managing Director and Global Head of Technology for Apollo Global Management. Previously, he served as Chief Information Officer for The Baupost Group in Boston and Chief Technology Officer and Head of Risk Management for Drake Management in New York. Earlier in his career, Mr. Herin led large-scale software development and integration efforts as Head of Application Development for PIMCO in Newport Beach and as Co-Head of the Aladdin Front-End Software Development team for BlackRock in New York. Mr. Herin is a CFA Charterholder, a certified Financial Risk Manager, a member of the Dean’s Leadership Council of The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine, and a member of NYSSA. He graduated from UCLA (B.S., Mathematics), and UC Irvine (MBA).
