Joshua S. Friedman is Co-Founder, Co-Chairman, and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Canyon Partners, LLC. Mr. Friedman is a graduate of Harvard College (B.A., summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Physics), Oxford University (M.A., honors, Politics and Economics, Marshall Scholar), Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude), and Harvard Business School (M.B.A., Baker Scholar). Prior to forming Canyon, Mr. Friedman was Director of Capital Markets for High Yield and Private Placements at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Prior to working at Drexel, he worked in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department of Goldman Sachs in New York. Mr. Friedman is also a director and trustee of a number of nonprofit and charitable organizations.
Mitchell R. Julis is Co-Founder, Co-Chairman, and Co-CEO of Canyon Partners, LLC. Mr. Julis is a graduate of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University (B.A., magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude), and Harvard Business School (M.B.A., honors). Prior to forming Canyon, Mr. Julis directed a group of professionals responsible for a portfolio of distressed and special situation securities at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Prior to working at Drexel, he was a bankruptcy and creditors' rights attorney at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York. Mr. Julis has authored a number of articles published in law journals and other periodicals on the subject of bankruptcy and distressed credit investing.
Senior Portfolio Managers
Allen Ba is Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager. He focuses on structured debt products (specifically RMBS), as well as investments in financial, insurance, real estate, energy, utility, and chemical companies.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2001, Mr. Ba worked at Crown Capital Group. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College (B.A., cum laude, honors in English Literature), the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles (M.B.A., Venture Fellow), and the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law (J.D., Law Review). He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder.
George Jikovski is Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager. He primarily focuses on identifying investment opportunities in the mortgage-backed securities (MBS), structured finance, and credit derivatives sectors. In addition, Mr. Jikovski is involved in the risk management and hedging of the portfolios.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2007, Mr. Jikovski was at Trust Company of the West, where he focused on high grade MBS, including MBS derivatives, collateralized mortgage obligations (CMOs), and market value CDOs. Mr. Jikovski was previously with the Financial Restructuring Group at Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin and was an Investment Banker in the Corporate Finance/M&A group at Bear, Stearns & Co, Inc. Mr. Jikovski graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.A. in Business Economics and a minor in accounting. Mr. Jikovski is a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder.
Todd Lemkin is Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager. He primarily focuses on opportunities in stressed and distressed bank loans and high yield securities within the cable, media, telecom, satellite and forest product sectors. Mr. Lemkin also focuses on European credit opportunities across a variety of industries.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2003, Mr. Lemkin was an analyst at Scoggin Capital Management LLC in New York where he focused on analyzing securities of distressed and bankrupt companies. Previously, he was an Investment Banker in the Healthcare Group of Banc of America Securities and the Mergers & Acquisitions group of Lehman Brothers, Inc. Mr. Lemkin is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (B.A., English).
Dominique Mielle is Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager. She primarily focuses on high yield, bank debt, and distressed securities as well as special situations such as securitization bonds and intra-capital arbitrage.
Prior to joining Canyon in 1998, Ms. Mielle worked as an Analyst at Lehman Brothers, Inc. in the Financial Institutions Group, where she focused on mergers and acquisitions. She also worked as an Associate at Libra Investments, Inc. in the Corporate Finance department where she covered middle market companies. Ms. Mielle graduated from Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales in France (B.S., International Management) and Stanford University Business School (M.B.A., Finance).
Soon Pho is Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager. He manages the Canyon Capital Arbitrage Fund (CARB) and oversees all investment activities in the convertible arbitrage strategy across the Canyon family of funds.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2001, Mr. Pho was an Associate at JUMP Investors, where he evaluated and executed private equity investments in information technology companies. Previously, he worked in the Investment Banking group at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette. Mr. Pho graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (B.S., summa cum laude, Economics).
Desmond Lynch is Managing Director and oversees trading activity in secondary market debt investments.
Prior to joining Canyon in 1993, Mr. Lynch was a member of the Mergers & Acquisitions department at The Seidler Companies. Prior to that, Mr. Lynch was an Account Executive at Bear, Stearns & Co., Inc., where he was involved in the sales of debt and equity investments. Mr. Lynch is a graduate of the University of Oregon (B.S., Finance).
Chris Heine is Managing Director and Head Equity Trader.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2005, Mr. Heine was a Principal and head Equity Trader at Och-Ziff Capital Management Group in New York. Prior to Och-Ziff, Mr. Heine was Vice President and Director at Toronto Dominion Securities (USA) in the Institutional Equity department. Prior to that, Mr. Heine was a Registered Option Trader and market maker on the American Stock Exchange. Mr. Heine is a graduate of Union College (B.A., Managerial Economics).
John Simpson is Chief Operating Officer of Canyon.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2005, Mr. Simpson was Vice Chairman of Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein ("DKW"). Mr. Simpson spent 15 years at DKW and its predecessor, Wasserstein Perella & Co., where he was a senior mergers and acquisitions professional and ran several of the Firm's largest business units. Previously, Mr. Simpson practiced law with Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York. Prior to that Mr. Simpson served as a law clerk to the Honorable William A. Norris of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is a graduate of Williams College (A.B., summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Economics and Political Science) and Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude; Editor, Harvard Law Review).
John Plaga is Chief Financial Officer.
Prior to joining Canyon in 1997, Mr. Plaga spent three years at Trust Company of the West where he managed an accounting staff and coordinated the financial reporting of various international equity and emerging market debt portfolios. Previously he was a senior auditor with Ernst & Young. Mr. Plaga is a graduate of University of Southern California (B.S., Accounting, cum laude). He is a Certified Public Accountant and CFA charterholder
Chris Borghi is Chief Technology Officer. He is responsible for all information technology.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2006, Mr. Borghi was the Chief Technology Officer of Integrated Finance Ltd. He has over 20 years of experience in Information Technology, with the bulk of his career with Wall Street firms. His previous experience includes senior positions at JP Morgan Chase, Credit Suisse First Boston, Moore Capital Management, Alliance Capital, and Salomon Brothers. Mr. Borghi received a B.A. in Computer Science with minor in Physics from Ithaca College.
Doug Anderson is Chief Compliance Officer. He is responsible for monitoring compliance with the federal and state securities laws as well as client mandates.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2005, Mr. Anderson was a senior Securities Compliance Examiner with the Pacific Regional Office of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for over five years. He was responsible for conducting compliance examinations (routine and cause) of various investment advisers and investment companies. Mr. Anderson is a graduate of the University of California, Davis (B.A., Economics and Communications) and Vermont Law School (J.D., cum laude).
Jonathan Kaplan is Canyon's General Counsel.
Prior to joining Canyon in 2007, Mr. Kaplan was a partner at Sidley Austin LLP, where he acted as outside counsel for Canyon and a number of other investment fund clients. He is a graduate of University of California, San Diego (B.A., Political Science) and New York University School of Law (J.D.).
